Errant Sidesword: The Courtly Wanderer

The Errant Sidesword draws the name from the knight-errant, a romanticized figure evolving through literature and culture to reflect shifting societal values. In 16th century, works like Cervantes’ Don Quixote began to parody traditional chivalric ideals, casting light on the contrasts between noble aspirations and the harsh realities of a changing world. Cervantes’ work satirized the romanticized notion of knight-errantry, portraying the protagonist’s efforts as delusional and outdated—a symbol of holding onto ideals in a world that had moved on.

The Errant Sidesword is based on mid-to-end 16th century transitional sideswords and rapiers, renowned for their intricate hilts and elegantly curved quillons, offering superior hand protection through its upper and lower ports, complemented by a three-branch counterguard.

The latest redesign introduces a fully reimagined crossguard with elegantly wide and concave ports, fishtail quillon tips, and a sculpted three-branch counterguard—combining finesse with structural protection. Now part of the “Modular Sword System™”, the heat-treated guard includes a knuckle bow for hand protection and fluid handling. Finger placement is natural and secure thanks to the smooth and comfortable quillon block, while the squared ring terminals echo period design cues. Available with blades of 95, 98, or 107 cm to suit your fencing preference.
