Manciolino Sidesword
430,00 € – 480,00 € excl. VAT
The Manciolino Sidesword for Bolognese Historical Fencing elevates the classic Manciolino through a complete redesign. Named after the Renaissance Maestro Antonio Manciolino, this light and elegant sidesword reflects the precision and fluidity of early Italian fencing techniques.
With options for four unique configurations and a reinforced, heat-treated crossguard, its thoughtful design makes it ideal for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), historical fencing, stage fencing and film productions.
Manciolino Sidesword: The Noblest Blow
The Manciolino Sidesword Op.II, or Opera Seconda, is the refined second edition of our classic Manciolino. It draws inspiration from Maestro Antonio Manciolino, a prominent 16th century Bolognese fencing master and contemporary of Achille Marozzo. The treatise attributed to Manciolino “Opera Nova per Imparare a Combattere, & Schermire d’ogni forte Armi” dates to 1531, though references to “newly printed and corrected” editions suggest earlier versions may have existed.
The most genteel [and noble] of blows is the mandritto, […] since it makes a man go entirely uncovered in that tempo – Maestro Antonio Manciolino
Our latest redesign focuses on improving the bulb pommel, adding an exquisite neck at its base, advancing our universal “Modular Sword System™” goal. The grip offers now a more substantial feel for better handling, while the guard is heat-treated. It includes an extended knuckle bow that adds extra room toward the pommel for glove support and configurations 3 and 4 are fully ambidextrous. Additionally, resting your finger on the quillon block is exceptionally comfortable, and the squared blocks on the finger rings add a touch of elegance.
FEATURES:
- Light and ambidextrous: Around 1 kilogram, configurations 3 and 4 are fully ambidextrous.
- Heat-treated crossguard and blade: Ensures durability and longevity.
- Updated configurations: Choose from four options combining bulb or disc pommel and one or two small ports.
- Diamond narrow blade: Offers superior control in thrusts and fluid lunge motion.
- Wider knuckle-bow and round small ports: Enhanced deflection and glove space.
- Comfortable ricasso:Â Rounded ricasso enhances grip comfort.
- Rounded quillon block: Premium comfort and grip for finger placement.
- Blunt edges, high flexibility and thickened tip: Prioritizes safety in HEMA training and competition.
- Historical design with modern upgrades: Inspired by 16th century European sideswords and Manciolino’s techniques, designed specifically for Martial Arts and Historical Fencing.
The Manciolino sidesword combines versatility for the modern fencer, and those who value historical refinement, crafted for seamless integration with various companion tools—whether wielding a buckler, targa, parrying dagger, cape, or a case of swords.

- Handmade Character: Variations between items of the same type, asymmetries, edge misalignments, slight variations in static and dynamic parameters, and in grip color are inherent to the handmade production process.

- Blade and Hilt Maintenance: After use, always clean the blade, pommel, and crossguard with oils like Gunex or WD40.
- Grip Care: Avoid applying oil to a cord grip. Instead, gently clean it by rubbing with a cloth soaked in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
- Leather Grip Care: Keep your leather grip nourished with leather oil or grease, but remember— protective products will darken the shade over time.
- Rust Prevention: Promptly address any rust, as it can penetrate beneath the surface of the steel, causing damage.
- Storage Guidelines: Store your sword in a dry environment and away from damp gear.
- Damage Prevention: Always round nicks or dents with a flat file to prevent breakages.
