Flos Longsword: The Magistro’s choice
The Flos Longsword pays tribute to the archetypal late medieval longswords seen in Fiore dei Liberi’s Flos Duellatorum(1409-10), one of the oldest known fencing treatises, and to historical examples such as the sword attributed to The Black Prince. These swords, with their extreme triangular profile tapers and diamond-section blades, were engineered for piercing plate armor—an essential innovation in response to advancements in protective technology during the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
Fiore dei Liberi, the renowned Italian fencing master, used similar longswords to teach both unarmored and armored combat techniques. His Flos Duellatorum, or The Flower of Battle, exemplifies the martial ideals of balance, strength, and elegance—qualities embodied in this sword. Inspired by several surviving originals and medieval frescoes, the Flos honors these principles, delivering a historically accurate training sword.
The Flos features an acute triangular profile taper and a diamond-section blade, providing structural rigidity while maintaining an agile feel. Its perfect proportions and a thickened, rounded tip ensure safe use in historical reenactments, staged battles, and demonstrations, but the blade’s stiffness and the guard’s anatomy are not recommended for HEMA. It’s a perfect companion for those dedicated to recreating medieval combat with authenticity and attention to detail. Its wide blade offers a solid structure with exceptional control and dynamic response. The straight crossguard with downward-angled tips and the ergonomic grip reflect late medieval design trends, complemented by two pommel options tailored to suit your fighting style and personal preference
Whether studying Fiore’s system or exploring German longsword traditions like Talhoffer or Liechtenauer, the Flos Longsword excels in its balance and responsiveness, making it an ideal companion for study and technical practice.
The Flos is available hot-peened, for those who value a method that has been standard for centuries, or dismountable via the Modular Sword System™, for those who want to open it, service it, and know exactly what’s going on inside – without spoiling its beauty. Tang and blade remain one continuous piece of steel with no welds; the new truncated pyramid button disassembles with a wrench included in the box, in under a minute, remaining very discreet unless you use a lens.
