Thiago Smallsword: Refined display of power

The minimalist hilt and shells are very practical to be carried around,
like the shorter blade, and this might represent a status symbol for the wearer.

Five swords – From the  XVI to the XIX century
by Iacopo Iacoponi and Francesco Prati, 2022

The Thiago smallsword is an exact, functional sport replica of an original piece from the private collection of Iacopo Iacoponi, collector and head coach of the Confraternita della Spada Club in Florence. This smallsword well represents the sophistication of 18th century Italian smallswords. Known for its ergonomic design, the Italian smallsword was favored across Europe for practicality and refined aesthetics.

In the 18th century, smallswords evolved as both functional weapons and symbols of status, embodying the transition from ornate foils to practical dueling swords. The Italian tradition emphasized larger finger rings, enabling greater control and comfort during practice and combat. The Thiago Smallsword stays true to this heritage with its wide brass finger rings and asymmetrical quillons,  engineered to fit the index finger perfectly.

The brass hilt, featuring a double shell guard offers robust hand protection, while the oval pommel, imitating an acorn, reflects the balance between functionality and status symbol.

The blade is handcrafted in our workshop rather than using a standard modern épée blade. It features a diamond cross-section, carefully designed to provide an optimal balance between flexibility, precision in the thrust, and historical handling characteristics.

Unlike standard modern épée blades, this blade is engineered to outperform common commercial smallswords while remaining faithful to the handling qualities of historical originals.

As part of our Modular Sword System™, the Thiago Smallsword is fully dismountable, simplifying maintenance and ensuring durability. Its lightweight design ensures agility and responsiveness, making it an excellent tool for historical fencing practice.

FEATURES:

  • Super lightweight: With its correct blade geometry, it maintains optimal weight parameters while remaining completely blunt at 550 grams.
  • Wide finger rings: Typically Italian, they provide ergonomic comfort and precise handling.
  • Double brass shell guard: Provides optimal hand protection with historical accuracy.
  • Handcrafted proprietary blade: Designed to excel against common commercial smallswords.
  • Blunt edges, high flexibility, and thickened tip: Prioritizes safety in HEMA training and competition.
  • Dismountable design: Simplifies maintenance, transport, replacement and customization.

The Thiago Smallsword is ideal for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), historical fencing, stage fencing, and film productions. With its refined craftsmanship and ergonomic design, it bridges Italian tradition and modern practicality, offering fencers a versatile and elegant tool for mastering smallsword techniques.
