XIX Early Sidesword: Fencing like a Captain of Venture
The XIX Early Sidesword exemplifies the origins of the sidesword with its parallel profile taper, wide blade and fullered cross-section. This model draws inspiration from a sword housed in the Arsenal of Alexandria’s sword preserved in the Royal Armouries (Leeds) and it aims to offer a transitional design suitable for Anonimo Bolognese techniques.
The proportions of the original sword from the Royal Armouries have been adjusted for enhanced agility, flexibility, and safety during use.
The inclusion of a finger ring, a feature seen on historical weapons since the 14th century, allows for improved grip and maneuverability during thrusts and cuts. In fact, contrary to common beliefs, finger rings were present as early as the mid-14th century, appearing on various weapon types, including longswords and baselard swords.
FEATURES:
- Wide parallel blade: Enhances cut-actions and strong binding emphasizing the inertia of the blade
- Fullered cross-section: Reduces weight while maintaining strength, contributing to the sword’s overall maneuverability and flexibility.
- Finger ring: Provides a secure grip and versatility, allowing for dynamic movements during cuts and thrusts.
- No knuckle bow: Your hand and wrist remain comfortable, regardless of glove type.
- Comfortable ricasso: Rounded ricasso enhances grip comfort.
- Historical authenticity: Captures the essence of early sidesword designs while adapting them for contemporary martial arts.
- Thickened tip and rounded blunt edge: Ensures safety during HEMA practice and tournaments.
The XIX Early Sidesword serves as a sport version of these transitional historical weapons, offering a simplified design tailored specifically for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).
