The Fugitive Sidesword is a premier swept-hilt transitional sidesword, drawing its name from the Latin phrase tempus fugit (“time flies”), a concept explored by Virgil in his Georgics and echoed by Shakespeare in his reflections on the fleeting nature of time.
Inspired by intricate hilt designs of the 16th century, it features a two-branch counterguard, curved quillons, and protective upper and lower ports. The Fugitive offers exceptional hand protection and a blade that excels in both binding and thrusting, making it ideal for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), historical fencing, stage fencing, and film productions.

Fugitive Sidesword: The Ephemeral Lady

The Fugitive sidesword is based on original mid-to-end 16th century transitional swept-hilt sideswords and rapiers, renowned for their intricate hilts and elegantly curved quillons. Representing the top-notch configuration among our sport sideswords, along with the Errant sidesword, it draws its name from the Latin phrase tempus fugit, meaning “time flies”. Originating from Virgil‘s Georgics, this notion of the “fugitive nature of existence” was later echoed by Shakespeare, reflecting on the swift passage of time and the urgency to seize the moment. The Fugitive sidesword embodies this philosophy, urging its wielder to master the art of fencing with both urgency and grace.

Our latest redesign focuses on improving wrist ergonomics with the new curvy fig pommel and a well-proportioned oval pommel, completely interchangeable, advancing our universal “Modular Sword System™” goal. The grip offers a more substantial feel for better handling, while the guard is heat-treated.

The Fugitive’s upper and lower ports, combined with a two-branch counterguard, offer comprehensive hand protection, allowing for confident engagement in both offensive and defensive maneuvers, and it was designed in collaboration with the Elizabethan Fencing School Tempus Fugitives.

FEATURES:

  • Agile and versatile: Approximately 1.23 kilograms, it adapts seamlessly to Renaissance fencing techniques.
  • Heat-treated crossguard and blade: Ensures resilience and longevity.
  • Two pommel styles: Choose between fig or oval pommels to suit personal preference.
  • Diamond wide blade: Provides superior control in binding and fluid thrusting motions.
  • Comfortable ricasso: Rounded design enhances grip comfort.
  • Blunt edges, high flexibility, and thickened tip: Prioritizes safety in HEMA training and competition.
  • Historical design with modern upgrades: Inspired by complex hilt originals and training swords from the second half of the 16th century, designed specifically for Historical European Martial Arts and Historical Fencing.

The Fugitive sidesword seamlessly blends versatility and historical refinement, making it an ideal choice for the modern fencer. Its design allows for effortless integration with various companion weapons, whether paired with a buckler, targa, parrying dagger, or a case of swords.
