Marozzo Sidesword | In stock

The Marozzo Sidesword exemplifies the iconic Spada da Lato Italiana for Bolognese Historical Fencing. It was named after Renaissance Maestro Achille Marozzo, who likely wielded similar models to master and teach the Bolognese style. With two distinct pommel options for tuning balance and dynamics, an agile, wide blade and heat-treated crossguard, the Marozzo Sidesword commands authority in bindings and thrusts. Ideal for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), historical fencing, stage fencing and film productions.

Description

Marozzo Sidesword: The Bolognese Grace

The Marozzo Sidesword for Bolognese Fencing captures the essence and elegance of the Renaissance Spada da Lato Italiana. Named after Maestro Achille Marozzo Bolognese, it combines the design of 16th century museum artifacts and the models illustrated in his Opera Nova chiamata Duello (1536) which, along with Maestro Antonio Manciolino work, define the fundamentals of Bolognese fencing style.

You must never attack without defending, nor defend without attacking, and if you do this you shall not fail. – Maestro Achille Marozzo

With protection from the port and curved, ridged quillons, it offers balance in bindings and agility in thrusts, changing its attitude depending on the choice of the pommel.

FEATURES:

  • Light and responsive: Around 1 kilogram, ideal for Bolognese fencing techniques.
  • Heat-treated crossguard and blade: Ensures resilience and longevity.
  • Two pommel styles: Choose the fig for thrusting or the disc for stronger cuts.
  • Diamond wide blade: Offers superior control in binding and fluid cutting motion.
  • No knuckle bow: Your hand and wrist remain comfortable, regardless of glove type.
  • Comfortable ricasso: Rounded ricasso enhances grip comfort.
  • Blunt edges, high flexibility and thickened tip: Prioritizes safety in HEMA training and competition.
  • Historical design: Modeled after period artifacts and swords depicted in Marozzo’s Opera Nova.

Elevate your historical fencing practice with the Marozzo Sidesword, a refined and reliable choice for those who want to perfect their skills in the Bolognese school—whether wielding a buckler, targa, parrying dagger, cape, or a case of swords.

  • Handmade Character: Variations between items of the same type, asymmetries, edge misalignments, slight variations in static and dynamic parameters, and in grip color are inherent to the handmade production process.
  • Image Disclaimer: Product images are for reference only; actual appearance may vary due to differences in screen settings and display characteristics like resolution and color accuracy.
  • Warranty Notice: These variations do not affect the functionality of the sword and are not considered imperfections or grounds for warranty claims.
  • Blade and Hilt Maintenance: After use, always clean the blade, pommel, and crossguard with oils like Gunex or WD40.
  • Grip Care: Avoid applying oil to a cord grip. Instead, gently clean it by rubbing with a cloth soaked in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
  • Leather Grip Care: Keep your leather grip nourished with leather oil or grease, but remember— protective products will darken the shade over time.
  • Rust Prevention: Promptly address any rust, as it can penetrate beneath the surface of the steel, causing damage.
  • Storage Guidelines: Store your sword in a dry environment and away from damp gear.
  • Damage Prevention: Always round nicks or dents with a flat file to prevent breakages.
