Source: Designed after one baselard from the Castelvecchio Museum (Verona, Italy), this kind of dagger is also depicted in period miniatures and frescoes, and several examples can be found among original specimens.

A Thrust from Above

The Castelvecchio Baselard, with the typical H grip structure, is double edged and with exquisite black horn or precious wooden grip. The “U” grip form allows the thumb to handle the baselard in the classical “sopramano” position. Ewart Oakeshott, the famous arms collector and historian, maybe exaggerating a little, said “Hardly a picture painted between about 1300 and 1420 is without one visible somewhere.”
